Joyce, the daughter of Korean immigrants, was born in Minneapolis and grew up in Richmond, Kentucky, where she and her family were members of First Presbyterian Church. Joyce grew up studying piano from the age of five until the year after she graduated from college. She attended Rhodes College, where she majored in religious studies and classical languages.
After spending one post-graduation year as an International Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in Tübingen, Germany, Joyce attended the University of Chicago Divinity School for her M.Div. degree and the Ph.D. program in theological ethics.
Before her 2007 installation as Associate Pastor for Congregational Life, Joyce was Campus Minister to Presbyterian undergraduate students at Yale University. She occasionally serves as adjunct faculty for McCormick Theological Seminary.
Joyce, her husband, and their daughter live in Hyde Park.
