Today’s Scripture Reading  |  Colossians 3:23–25
Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters, since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong has been done, and there is no partiality. (NRSV)

Reflection
When I was a youth leader at a prior church, the group held an annual car wash to raise money for the high school mission trip. Some of the kids would line up along the street, holding ginormous pink arrows to point drivers to the car wash. We leaders were in our early twenties, working our way through first jobs, figuring out up-and-down relationships, and finding our place in the postcollege world. When struggling with some issue or relationship, we often joked that we wished God would send Big Pink Arrows to point us in the right direction.

Fast forward a few decades, and I’m older, more established in my roles, hopefully wiser. But I still sometimes struggle with my place in the world. I am an editor, a wife, a mother, a volunteer, a teacher, chief puppy trainer . . . the list goes on. Is this enough, or is there some larger plan for my life that I’m not yet aware of? And am I truly doing all these things for God, or just for myself and my family? How does that work?

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord . . .” Perhaps the specifics of my work are less important than the faith to trust that I’m listening to God and working for God. And ultimately, the wisdom to see the arrows, whether big and pink or small and orange or a biblical passage, that continue to point me to God.

Prayer
Lord God, help me to do what I do for your sake and not just mine. Help me to see your arrows pointing me to you. Amen.
