Today’s Scripture Reading  |  Psalm 93

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;
   the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
   your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
   the floods have lifted up their voice;
   the floods lift up their roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
   more majestic than the waves of the sea,
   majestic on high is the Lord!

Your decrees are very sure;
   holiness befits your house,
   O Lord, forevermore. (NRSV)

Reflection
This psalm reminds me of the children’s song I sang in Sunday School growing up. We would sing at the top of our lungs (with corresponding hand motions) “My God is so great, so strong, and so mighty, there’s nothing my God cannot do.” I think I drove my parents nuts, as the rest of the week I would go around singing the song every time it popped into my head.

I will admit that apart from when I help with VBS now, I don’t tend to sing God’s praises at the top of my lungs. There is something special about the way a child can live fully into their emotions and wear their emotions on their sleeves, leaving no doubt to the people around them what they love, whom they love, what foods they like or don’t like. So as I read this psalm I am reminded to take joy in the awesome majesty of God. And if I am not going to sing it at the top of my lungs, I can at least hum to myself “the mountains are his, the rivers are his, the stars are his handiwork too!”

Prayer
Creator God, thank you for all the gifts you bestow upon me. I am humbled by your power and strength. Though I often forget it in the mundane of daily life, you are in control of the chaos, and for that I am truly grateful. Amen.
