PROGAM ASSISTANT for Sunday Mornings
Fourth Presbyterian Church, a growing, 5,800-member congregation in downtown Chicago, is seeking a Program Assistant for Sunday mornings. The Assistant will be responsible for assisting the clergy staff and the ushers in providing a hospitable and welcoming environment in the Narthex of Fourth Presbyterian Church immediately prior to, during, and after each Sunday morning worship service. (The services begin at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.). It is the collective responsibility of clergy, ushers, and the Program Assistant to maintain the integrity of worship by facilitating a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere. It is the particular responsibility of the Program Assistant to provide compassionate assistance in welcoming and addressing the needs of worshipers who express that they are homeless or facing the threat of homelessness, some of whom may or may not be registered guests of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center at Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Greet and acknowledge Social Service Center guests in particular and other worshipers in general
  • Engage with Social Service Center guests and be available and present for them
  • Address the immediate needs of Social Service Center guests 
  • Check in with off-duty police officers, the clergy person stationed in the Narthex, and one or more head usher
  • Keep in touch with the receptionist and house staff by radio when not in the Narthex
  • Make rounds of the building, identifying Social Service Center guests as needed
  • Prepare weekly report for review by the Social Service Center Director
  • Participate once monthly both in distributing lunches to Social Service Center guests and in the Social Service Center team meeting

Qualifications

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Interest in and ability to interface actively with church members, ushers, and clergy as a representative of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center
  • Creative attitude and sensitivity toward diverse people and multicultural communities
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion
  • Preference for working in a team environment with shared decision making


Experience

  • Experience working with persons who are homeless
  • Knowledge of social service agencies in Chicago-area preferred
  • Previous experience in working in a church or faith-based organization preferred


Schedule

    • 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday mornings
    • one team meeting each month (Mondays at 2:00 p.m.)
    • one lunch program distribution each month (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday,
      12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.)
