Nurturing
Mind, Body, and Spirit
Kids
Cafe is the first activity of the evening.
Life-skills
lessons make up the first component of
Kids Cafe®,
a program of America’s Second Harvest
through the
greater Chicago Food Depository.
Thanks to a capacity-building
grant from WGN Neediest
Kids Fund, staff and volunteers
utilize Arise,
a curriculum from the University of Miami
that is designed specifically for at-risk students.
Students
are engaged through interactive lessons and
lively discussions
on topics such as goal setting,
substance abuse, teen pregnancy,
nutrition and exercise,
conflict management, and self-esteem.
During the second half
of Kids Cafe,
a hot and nutritionally
balanced meal
is served
prior to study time. Since the
establishment
of Kids Cafe,
tutors have seen an increase
in concentration, focus, and interest from their students.

Director of Tutoring and Scholarship, at 312.981.3562 (sjackson@fourthchurch.org).
Volunteer group facilitators are needed to help small groups of students learn the art of working together as a team.
Facilitators will help youth create projects and engage in discussion around topics such as becoming self-aware,
coping with peer pressure, challenging media stereotypes, and negotiating and communicating with others.
For students, grade K-6, learning centers will be used
to reinforce explicit instruction on life-skills.
