Today’s Hymn
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise,
and all your day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till traveling days are done.

“I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” (v. 3) by Horatius Bonar
Hymn 182, Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal

Reflection
In Chicago at this time of year it can seem a long time since the sun warmed us. We are at the cusp of spring but still the grayness and chill of lingering winter persist. Just think what it will be like to step out into a bright sunlit day and feel the warm sun bathing you once again! For me there’s something about closing my eyes and tilting my face to the sun that immediately puts me in a better place. It just makes me feel good. The sunshine goes beyond the physical; it also bathes me emotionally. And I can see it in the people around me too—there are more smiles. Everyone’s step is just a bit bouncier. Imagine carrying those same feelings around all the time

And just as with the emergence of the warm sun and first breath of spring, I feel better when listening to this hymn too. There is not a more powerful promise than that of perpetual light, especially during the darker days of Lent and the impending journey to the cross. I am filled with anticipation. I feel enveloped by the hope of the new morn, the morning that will break on Easter. So I will close my eyes and lift my face, ready and grateful for the gift of God’s light.

Prayer
Lord, shine your light on me. Be my sun and guiding star. Let me feel your warming presence as you embrace me on life’s journey, for in your perpetual light there is no darkness or fear to overcome. Amen.
