Today’s Scripture Reading | Titus 3:4–7
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (NRSV)
It’s pretty clear in these verses: God’s unconditional love appears through the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a gift God gives us, not because we did anything to earn it but because God is merciful and good.
I am especially drawn to “through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” It speaks of baptism; it reminds me of my own baptism and the baptisms we get to witness. It’s wonderful to imagine the Spirit being poured out on us when the pastor cups the water on the infant’s head and makes the sign of the cross with water on its forehead.
This Spirit being poured out on us is a gift of new beginning. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”
I am comforted knowing that no matter where I am, what is happening, or what I do, I can begin again. I can rejoice in the Spirit being poured out on me, giving me rebirth and renewal. What an amazing gift God gives us! Hallelujah!
Merciful and loving God, we are so very grateful for the grace you gave us through your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for pouring out your love on us. Help us to remember that we can begin again with you. Help us to rejoice in the rebirth and renewal of your Spirit. Amen.
