Today’s Scripture Reading  |  Psalm 138

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
   before the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down toward your holy temple
   and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness;
for you have exalted your name and your word
   above everything.
On the day I called, you answered me,
   you increased my strength of soul.

All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord,
   for they have heard the words of your mouth.
They shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
   for great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly;
   but the haughty he perceives from far away.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
   you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies;
you stretch out your hand,
   and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
   your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands. (NRSV)

Throughout the pandemic, there have been times that I feel like I’m spiraling out of control, and this has been one of those weeks. My mind is filled with doom and gloom, and I feel frustrated, angry, and just down in the dumps. Will we ever get out of this pandemic? Will I ever get out of this funk? Today’s psalm is a good reminder of God’s unfailing love and support for us all, even when we are facing difficult times.

When I get in one of these doom-and-gloom moods, it is easy to forget about the blessings that I do have. I have a wonderful husband and daughter who love me when I’m not so easy to love. I have two fur babies (Alina the cat and Penny the doodle dog) that know when I need a cuddle. I have wonderful, supportive friends who check in to make sure that I’m doing OK. My family is healthy, and we have all that we need. God answers my prayers and gives me the strength that I need to get through each day.

Even though it may feel like I’m surrounded by troubles, God is right there with me, loving and protecting me. I am very grateful for God’s presence in my life, and I’m grateful for this psalm that reminds me of all the blessings that I have.

Loving and faithful God, I thank you for all that you do for me, even when I may be difficult to love. Even during dark times you walk with me, support me, and give me strength. Help me to remember these blessings each and every day. Amen.
