Today’s Scripture Reading
Matthew 19:23–30

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. (NRSV)

Reflection
It is very easy to get pulled into earthly things. We are blasted with social media, magazines, and television shows, all of which show us the fancy things in life. I will admit, I get awfully envious of some of the handbags, shoes, and jewelry I see walking around every day.

We are currently house hunting, and that brings in a whole new level of desire and envy. Is this condo pretty enough to have parties at? Will we have a nice roof deck? Are the kitchens and bathrooms top-notch? There are many days when I feel like a camel who will never get through the eye of the needle. I’m sure many of us experience the same things on a regular basis.

I often think of the disciples and members of the early church, who left all of their belongings to follow the teachings of Jesus. Could I do that? Honestly, I don’t think I have it in me.

Putting aside all of the tangible items that we are attached to, what are our values and priorities when it comes to living into Jesus’ teachings? How can we put those to use in our everyday lives?

Let’s be generous. Let’s be loving to all. I live in the south loop, and we have a “love fridge” down the street. People fill it with food, others take what they need. Sometimes we need to take a step back from our own wants and do good for those that are in need.

Prayer
Loving God, I am so grateful for all that you have blessed me with. Help me to set aside my envy and wants, and help me to serve those that are in need. Amen.
