Today's Scripture
Psalm 145:10–18

All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,
to make known to all people your mighty deeds
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is faithful in all his words
and gracious in all his deeds.
The Lord upholds all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is just in all his ways
and kind in all his doings.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth. (NRSVUE)

Reflection

David extolls God’s power, providence, and everlasting glory. We are reminded that success and wealth are not self-made achievements but gifts from God. We should give thanks to God and look for ways to praise and extend God’s grace across our community.

But what to do if you read this passage and are experiencing grief, self-doubt, or illness or are dealing with frayed and broken family relationships? We can take comfort that we are not alone. “The Lord supports all who fall down, the Lord straightens up all who are bent low.”

The headlines are filled with news of war, gun violence, and strife, so there is no shortage of reason to bend our heads with worry. “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” Let us use our words, deeds, and prayers to draw closer to God. We are called to trust and work to advance all God’s people.

Prayer

Dear gracious and everlasting Lord, we are grateful for all your blessings in our lives. We are grateful for summer weather, lakefront walks, and sun-filled days. Help us see your grace when we ruminate on our perceived shortcomings or feel alone. Help us act to advance peace, fellowship, and radical hospitality to our neighbors. Help us build a vibrant and welcoming community that works to extend your grace to those in need.

We pray for this in your name. Amen.
