Today's Scripture
Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

I was drawn to the word ‘clothe’ in this verse. Clothing is what people see on the outside. It can communicate something about who I am or what I believe.

When I think about what it means to clothe myself in compassion, kindness, humility, and patience, I think about what people will see when they look at me. To clothe myself in these virtues, I need to speak and act in ways that call those things to mind for those who hear my words and see my actions.

Clothing is what others see when they look at me; but it’s also what I see when I look in the mirror. When I get dressed in the morning, do I like what I see? Does it fit well? Does it make me feel confident and capable? Does it reflect who I am? I could ask those same questions about my words and actions.

I don’t own much clothing that overtly says, “I’m a Christian.” But I do own two beautiful cross necklaces that carry tremendous sentimental value. When I wear them, I am intentionally communicating that I represent what it means to follow Christ. It creates added encouragement and positive pressure to and make choices that are pleasing to God.

Prayer

Lord, in this season of repentance and preparation, give me the strength and courage to look through my wardrobe of words and actions and dress myself in those that communicate compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Amen.
