Today's Scripture
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Reflection
My first meditations on this passage centered on the word “first.” Out of every voice and company trying to get our attention, what an idea to put the Kingdom of God first. In our hyperlinked, short-form-forward, screen-saturated culture, how does one know what it is to seek the Kingdom of God at all, let alone seek it first? Jobs and corporate overlords constantly demand prioritization and goals. What would it look like to seek the Kingdom of God first? Before any goal, before any wish, or distraction, or relief?
But as the weeks of meditating on this passage have passed, I’m also struck by the word “seek,” Seek is action; seek is a process. The passage acknowledges that this is something everyone has to look for; no one just has it or is it. I’m not there yet, and perhaps never will be. Maybe the Kingdom of God is not yet another goal that ought to get priority, but an action, a way of being. Suppose God’s righteousness could help me understand all the other goals, help me filter all the other voices and distractions that pelt me every day. Suppose the seeking made my life clearer and more grounded?
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for my life: my gifts, blessings, and freedoms. I am not finished living, and I do not wish to spend my remaining time aimlessly or in subservience to earthly, shallow demands. Can your righteousness help me withstand all the noise of the day-to-day? I want to seek your kingdom first. Amen.
