All over the ancient Mediterranean at the end of the Bronze Age scholars see patterns of social and political disruption. In ancient Greece, those effects were profound and changed art in such fundamental ways The scholars have labeled these years of the dark ages. The art that the Greeks made during and immediately after this time show a completely different approach to thinking about and representing the world. This class will explore the changes that set the stage for the classical art of the fifth century.

Catherine Zurybida did her graduate work at the University of Chicago studying early medieval art history and has been teaching art history at DePaul University since 1990. She lives on the south side of Chicago and gives tours of the Pullman historic district for fun.
