World War II – The Liberation and Afterwards

This class will explore the immediate and violent postwar years in Europe (1945–1948). Americans thought the war was over and ignored the postwar chaos. Historians are currently examining what happened to collaborators, to displaced persons, to Germans, and what happened in the areas appropriated by the Russians after the war (parts of Poland, East Berlin, the Balkans, Czechoslovakia, etc.).

June 5
World War II – The Story of the Survival of Women

How did women survive in the concentration camps?  How did comfort women survive?  How did women survive the German assault on Ukraine and Russia?  What happened to the children of German soldiers?  What happened to the children after the war?

Jane Hunt is a retired College of DuPage English and humanities instructor and has been teaching at the CLL since 1990. She is a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana University, and she enjoys formulating questions on diverse topics and then looking for answers with her classes.

The Summer Games kick off on July 26. One Olympic outcome is certain: Paris 2024 is putting on a winning show!

The city has quite a few tricks up its sleeve: An Opening Ceremony that doesn’t take place in a stadium. A swimming event in the Seine. A gold medal embedded with a piece of Paris history.

Before you watch, find out what Paris has in store for the athletes and the viewing audience. Learn about the new sports, the hotly anticipated competitions, and the unique French touches.

It’s Paris’ third time hosting and the class will look back to the 1900 and 1924 Games. Chicago’s connections to the Olympics will also be explored.

Join Jean Klingle in person or from home for an enjoyable and informative look at what to expect from the Summer Games.
