Today’s Scripture Reading
Psalm 93

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;

the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.

He has established the world; it shall never be moved;

your throne is established from of old;

you are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,

the floods have lifted up their voice;

the floods lift up their roaring.

More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,

more majestic than the waves of the sea,

majestic on high is the Lord!

Your decrees are very sure;

holiness befits your house,

O Lord, for evermore. (NRSV)

Reflection
In Anne Lamott’s book Help, Thanks, Wow she proposes that our responses to the Divine fall into these three categories. This psalm is all about the wow.

The psalmist highlights that God put the entire cosmos and all that we know and are into motion. God is eternal and steadfast. God is mighty and powerful like the ocean waters. God’s directives for us are established and reliable.

My most reliable experience of God’s magnificence and wow-ness is in the natural world. A starry night, a storm, a sunset, a sunflower, a spiderweb, an unfurling forest fern, a mountain scene, or a sleeping baby.

Combine this with what else we know about God: we are created in God’s image; God is always present with us even in silence; we belong to God; God sees and knows us and God loves every one of us unconditionally.

Prayer
Dear God, I am grateful for the relationship you offer me and everyone. I love you. WOW! Amen.
