Today's Hymn
“My Song Is Love Unknown”

My song is love unknown,
my Savior’s love to me,
love to the loveless shown
that they might lovely be.
O who am I
that for my sake
my Lord should take
frail flesh, and die?

by Samuel Crossman
Hymn 209, Glory to God
verse 1

Reflection

When we think of love we think of family, friends, or pets we have in our lives whom we are willing to do just about anything for. We may have known them our entire lives or for a shorter span of time, but the history and affection is there. Many of us have been blessed to experience currently or in the past earthly love and relationships that we truly feel run deep. However, the writer of this hymn speaks of a love that is so great — so vast — that it is “unknown.”

This song of love describes Christ’s love for us that is so pure and complete that, as unworthy as we may feel we are, Christ was still willing to die for us. We try to compare it with the love we know here on earth, but there truly is no comparison. Christ’s bold, unconditional love and ultimate sacrifice for all people, those who believed in him and those who didn’t, is simply unimaginable.

Prayer
Lord, we are so grateful for those you allow us to be in loving fellowship with albeit through familial relationships or friendships here on earth. May you continue to bless these bonds. We pray for those who may feel lonely or forgotten. Help all of us to remember your steadfast “love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be.” We are so thankful for the unimaginable love you have for us that you would make the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. We praise and honor you. Amen.
